A studio built around paying attention

Ashman & Company is a South African creative studio with three divisions and one way of working.

The studio

Ashman & Company started in 2006 with a cheap Canon and a car boot for a studio. We would be driving somewhere, see the light fall on a wall or a field, pull over, jump out and shoot. Most of what we know, we learned on the side of the road.

The work got better year by year, and so did the people in front of the lens. Models who first stood in our frame as beginners have since gone international and built names of their own. Weddings led to portraits, portraits to events, and events to the businesses hosting them asking for video, which became the Media division. Model management followed when clients kept asking us to find faces for their campaigns.

The one thing that has not changed is the passion for photography. It is the fire at the heart of Ashman & Company, and it is what carried us from a start-up with a cheap camera to a full media house that covers everything from a single portrait to a whole campaign. Most of the work is in Gauteng; a good deal of it is wherever the client is.

Photographer

Maria is the photographer behind most of the portraits, maternity and studio work you see here, with a quiet way with people in front of the camera and an exact eye for light, styling and colour.

If you book a studio or portrait session, Maria will most likely be the one directing you, and the one who finishes your photographs by hand afterwards.

Founder and photographer

Ashley founded the studio and photographs alongside Maria on weddings, events and location shoots. Ashley also runs the Media and Models divisions and looks after the planning, quotes and delivery.

Together they work as a husband-and-wife duo: two photographers on the big days, one standard of finish, and one point of contact from the first message to the final gallery.
